Tip for a trip. A magical botanical garden hidden in the center of Prague
The most famous Prague botanic garden is the one in Troja, but the capital city also has one more place where you can admire the magical world of diverse flora. Right in the middle of the concrete jungle, in the greenhouses and garden of the Faculty of Science of Charles University, there is also a real jungle, full of greenery, which welcomes you even now in full bloom.
If you want to remember spring and summer full of flowers, a visit to the botanical garden is the ideal way. One of the oldest and largest university gardens in Europe is the botanical garden of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University.
Its history dates back to 1775, when it was still located on the left bank of the Vltava. However, the development of industry around Smíchov eventually caused the garden to be moved to Nové město. Here, unfortunately, part of it was destroyed during the Second World War, but it was managed to restore its beauty and today it belongs to the green jewels of the very center of Prague.
The garden is a small oasis in the middle of the big city
“The expositions of the botanical garden of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of Charles University are divided into greenhouse and outdoor. In the greenhouses there is a permanent display of tropics and dry subtropics. In the outdoor area, you will find an incredible number of plants, spread out on all kinds of slopes, rocks and bogs.” describes a place of travel the Placehunter app.
If you think that flowers have nothing to install now in autumn, you are wrong. The garden on its website regularly updates the list of those that are currently in bloom. And so you can easily find out that the garden is currently full of daisies, marigolds, periwinkles, chicory, hibiscus or sage.
Far more exotic plants await you inside the greenhouses themselves, which are fascinating to observe, whether they are blooming or not. Here you can admire extensive collections of succulents and cacti, old cycads, camellias, myrtles and others.
The area of the entire garden is 3.5 hectares and welcomes up to 100,000 visitors annually. Here, they can not only admire the plants, but also visit a number of exhibitions, workshops and other events. Of course, the place is also used for the education of students of the Faculty of Science as well as pupils of nearby secondary and elementary schools.
