The former head of the Moldovan Security Service, tried for illicit enrichment
The Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Moldova sent the former head of the Security, Vasile Botnari, as well as his mother-in-law, accused of complicity, to court on charges of illicit enrichment, they inform. Time.md.
The incriminated acts took place in the period 2014-2019.
Vasile Botnari, who exercised consecutive positions of public dignity (in Parliament, Government and SIS), would have bought goods in this activity through third parties, including his mother-in-law and daughter, their value far exceeding his financial means.
For example, the mother-in-law, who during that period had pension income of approximately 329,000 lei, accumulated real estate with a total value of over 19 million lei.
Botnari’s daughter, who had no income in that life, got an apartment, parking space and a car, totaling more than 5.9 million lei.
According to the evidence administered, they were identified real estate with a total value of over 24.5 million lei, as well as owned cars worth over 4 million lei. The anti-corruption prosecutors have seized these assets, for the purpose of possible special confiscation.
According to the law, illicit enrichment is punishable by a fine between 400,000 lei and 500,000 lei or imprisonment from 7 to 15 years.
The former director of the SIS was detained and placed in preventive detention for 25 days.
Later, the Chisinau Court transferred him to house arrest, but the Chisinau Court of Appeal overturned the court’s decision and ordered his placement in the penitentiary.
