Russia doubled trade with Armenia
Russia is involved in resolving the situation with the blockade of Armenia, Overchuk said
Trade turnover between Russia and Armenia has almost doubled in recent years. Alexey Overchuk, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Parliament, spoke about this and other details.
“From 2016 to 2021, the trade turnover between Russia and Armenia almost doubled – from $1.35 to $2.6 billion. It turns out that this growth is very balanced – both Russia’s merchandise exports to Armenia and our imports of goods from this country have almost doubled,” Overchuk said in an interview with Rossiyskaya Gazeta. In his opinion, such growth became possible due to Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) in 2015.
At the moment, more than 40 large large companies operate in Armenia, the Deputy Prime Minister noted. At the same time, Russia is interested in the development of mutual trade and investment. “Russian business is ready to offer solutions for the development of the transport, energy, social and digital economy,” Overchuk said.
In his opinion, Armenia benefits from the Eurasian expansion and supports its deepening. For example, the support of the Eurasian Economic Commission in the country is an important reform related to potential industrial cooperation between the economies of the EAEU member states.
In addition, Overchuk commented on the situation regarding the transport blockade of Armenia. The unblocking of ties in the South Caucasus gives a powerful impetus to the development of Armenia and the entire region. He noted that this is why the tripartite group of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia is engaged in this.
At the negotiations of the vice-premiers of the countries included in the group, there is a possibility of creating some kind of “ex-territorial corridor” that could infringe on the sovereignty of one of the parties. This is the basis of the fact that the group of chiefs is subordinate to the parties.
According to Overchuk’s forecasts, the inflow of Russian investments into the region could reach up to $5 billion. These figures will be obtained with the help of projects in the field of energy, transport and logistics, as well as mining and processing industries.
