Increase the network renewal rate to more than 1% per year » PACA’s economic and political newsletter
The summer drought episodes were a harsh reminder that water resources were an infinitely precious asset.
So precious that it is now unthinkable not to do everything to preserve it.
Following the 2022-2024 Contract – signed on September 5 between the Metropolis of Lyon, the Rhône Mediterranean Corsica Water Agency and around twenty contracting authorities – and which provides for 129 million euros of investment over 3 years, the Canaliseurs du Rhône are ready to take up the challenge of renewing the networks and to contribute to increasing the renewal rate to more than 1% each year, which today is 0.8%.
In the collective drive to preserve the planet, there was the sorting and reduction of waste, the revision of energy consumption and production methods… Until now in the background for the general public, hunting the waste of water – especially drinking water – comes as a matter of course.

A particularly fragile water network in times of drought
The renewal of underground pipes, an invisible heritage but essential to our comfort of life, is becoming essential in the light of climate change. The leak rate is 21% nationally, or 24 million euros wasted each year. In the Rhône, this rate drops to 16%. The renewal rate for drinking water networks is 0.8% compared to 0.6% for France. But these enviable and rather virtuous figures do not show that the efforts have rather focused on the distribution pipelines and less on the transmission main lines, which are much more expensive and complex to change. Or the recent incidents in Lyon are a reminder that the network remains fragile, especially in times of drought when the ground recedes, or especially under bus lines.
Excellent news for the renewal of pipes!
On September 5, the executive of the Métropole de Lyon undertook to increase the network renewal rate to more than 1% each year, i.e. approximately 40 km of cast iron pipes with a lifespan of 100 years. . This decision is great news! But we must go even faster and further. This is the responsibility of elected officials.
“We, Rhône pipeline professionals, are ready. Ready to invest to meet the challenges of the urgent renewal of drinking water pipes and conduits, in compliance with new environmental issues. Ready to chase leaks with powerful mapping, detection and flow tracking tools. Also ready to renew sewage treatment networks, which are even worse off. “.
