In Luxembourg“Knitting is not just a granny activity, it can be cool”
LUXEMBOURG – The non-profit association Mamie et moi has started its new season of knitting meetings. The opportunity to exchange and learn about leisure but not only…
Laetitia has always knitted, she takes a ball of yarn with her everywhere. Like a dozen others, she takes part in the workshops of the non-profit organization Mamie et Moi at Casino Luxembourg, which offers coffee-knitting encounters for all generations. “Each one comes with a project idea or simply a desire to learn,” explains the organizer, Camille Alexandre.
“The participants each have their own way of doing things and we talk a lot,” explains Judith, a place in Bertrange especially for the activity. For the former nurse from Montreal, attending the workshops is synonymous with pleasure, “I’ve been knitting sweaters for years and now I’m trying to make little woolen baby booties,” she confides.
In museums
The non-profit organization launched its first workshop ten years ago. Since then, the requests have continued to climb, according to the association. If many elderly people participate, working people and children also take part, “especially on Sundays”, we confirm the organizer. “The intergenerational aspect is very represented. Many young people want to learn from the older generation,” she observed.
“We bring people together around an activity but it is also an opportunity to push the door of museums,” adds Camille Alexandre. The workshops offered take place at several sites in the capital: at the Villa Vauban, at the National Museum of History and Art and at the Letzebuerg City Museum.
Recycle wool
An attraction that could be linked to an awareness of the important ecological weight of textiles. “There is a side to relearning how to do things and giving back value to what we have,” thinks Camille. Moreover, Judith does not hesitate to recycle her old sweaters rather than buy them, a perfect gesture in keeping with the environment: “I unknit them, I wash the wool and I redo sweaters. It also happens that the ‘we transform clothes that are too small or too big’.
Upcycling is also found at Laetitia: “The idea is to keep the garment as long as possible and not to be in fast-fashion. The Luxembourg resident chose to make a small bag, the same as her neighbour. “No knitting is not an activity of a granny sitting on the sofa, wishes to clarify Camille Alexandre, it can be something very cool and very creative”.
