Governments, architects and urban planners gather in San Marino to promote cooperation for urban development
Governments, mayors, prominent architects, urban planners and experts will gather in San Marino from 3 to 6 October 2022 for the 83rd session of the Committee on Urban Development, Housing and Land Management of the Economic Commission for Europe of the United Nations (UNECE). The session will support the exchange of experiences and good practices at the regional level to promote affordable, adequate and climate-neutral housing and inclusive, circular, smart and sustainable cities.
Design principles for sustainable architecture, urban design and practice.
Governments will be invited to adopt the San Marino Declaration, which establishes the commitment “to strengthen the role of architects, engineers, surveyors, urban planners and designers in guaranteeing sustainable, safe, healthy housing, urban infrastructures and cities. , socially inclusive, climate neutral and circular “. The Declaration proposes a set of “Principles for Sustainable and Inclusive Urban Design and Architecture”, negotiated under the auspices of the United Nations – a comprehensive sustainability charter for the design of all buildings and urban developments. These principles will be launched and symbolically signed by important architects and urban planners, including Lord Norman Foster, Stefano Boeri, together with the Orders of Architects of San Marino, Rimini and Pesaro in Italy. A dedicated press conference will be held on 3 October at 6.00 pm.

Promote cooperation on the main challenges at the city level
Among a number of key themes of sustainable urban development, the Committee’s 4-day session will discuss: The future of the UNECE Forum of Mayors – a pioneering platform for putting into practice a new and inclusive multilateralism. Following the Committee’s decision on the future of the Forum, a dedicated press conference will be held on 7 October at 9.30 – 10.00 (details and online link via Zoom will follow). The review of the implementation of Place and Life in UNECE – A Regional Action Plan 2030 (Place and Life in the UNECE – A Regional Action Plan 2030). A discussion on the emerging needs of the region in the sectors of housing, real estate and urban development, with the participation of mayors, deputy mayors and representatives of the cities of the Republic of Moldova, Poland, Romania and Greece, who will share their experiences , prospects and challenges to welcoming refugees from Ukraine, as well as challenges related to ongoing response and recovery efforts for COVID-19. Requests will be informed by a survey on the needs of cities. Voluntary local reviews of the Sustainable Development Goals: measure progress at the local level. Implementation of the “United for Smart and Sustainable Cities” initiative.
