Archabbot from Salzburg preaches – kath.ch
Gallus Day 2022 falls on Sunday, October 16th. This year, Archabbot Korbinian Birnbacher OSB (1967), Archabbey of St. Peter in Salzburg, will preach in the papal office with Bishop Markus Büchel at 10.30 a.m.
In the implemented monastery in the German-speaking area, 696 monks have been living, praying and working. With the Archabbot as the preacher, the beautiful tradition of inviting a Benedictine monk to the festive sermon in memory of the former St.Gallen monastery is being continued. Archabbot Korbinian entered St. Peter’s in 1987 and declared his final profession in 1991. After studying in Salzburg and Rome, he was ordained a priest in 1994. He held various positions in the monastery as master of novices, secretary of the Salzburg Abbots’ Conference, archivist, university chaplain or custodian of the art collections and prior in our community until he was elected 88th Abbot and 6th Archabbot of St. Peter by his confreres in 2013.
The Cathedral Choir, soloists and members of the St.Gallen Symphony Orchestra will participate in the service with the Mass in B flat major D 324 by Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Of course, the traditional Galluslied is also part of the festive service. As every year, people in traditional costume from the diocese cantons will move into the cathedral.
The festivities on Gallus Day begin as early as the service at 8.30 a.m. with the blessing of the Gallus wine. At 5:30 p.m., the holiday ends with the Pontifical Vespers.
