Three years after the fire at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, restoration work continues. Scaffolding to repair the spire has been erected, while the stones are being restored.
The scaffolding is still present inside the Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral, Thursday September 29. In order to rebuild the arrow, a new structure of 600 tons, which will peak at 100 m high, will be erected. “It rests on a wooden floor with a thickness of almost one meter, which must be like a racket, just to distribute the loads well”, says Philippe Villeneuve, chief architect of historical monuments. This scaffolding will make it possible to reconstruct identically the masterpiece of Viollet-le-Duc, the spire of the cathedral, which collapsed during the fire of Notre-Dame in 2019.
Little by little, the cathedral regains its brilliance. The cleaning of the chapels of the ambulatory made it possible to rediscover the pastel colors of the paintings imagined by Viollet-le-Duc. On stone vaults, latex was projected. When this ephemeral skin is removed, the impurities are washed away, along with the lead residue from the fire. “It’s a neutral latex, it doesn’t damage the stone”explains Giuseppina Genna, restaurateur at Chevalier.
