Prickly cuties: the South African swallow pair of the Debrecen zoo is raising new offspring
Since cubs are usually born only once a year in this species, this year’s second breeding is particularly special.
After another successful and eventful summer, we can announce another significant increase in the collection, because on September 23, another pair of twins was born at the South African hedgehog, the Debrecen zoo announced on Facebook.

Since cubs are usually born only once a year in this species, this year’s second breeding is particularly special.
Visitors should visit the pig run during the morning hours, because the two, so far unknown, little things are seen more and more often as they get to know the outside world, so the luckier ones can already catch a glimpse of them.
The South African hyena (Hystrix africaeaustralis) is native to the southern savannahs and forests of the continent. Africa’s largest rodent, like a crab, mainly eats plant parts, but it has also been seen on bones and animal carcasses. Unlike most rodent pups, little hedgehogs are born fully developed, with open eyes and hair. Their spines are still soft after birth, but harden after only a few days. Although they are basically still fed with mother’s milk, they start eating solid food at a few days old. They live in small family communities in South Africa, which are made up of the parent couple and their unsexed cubs.
Due to its excessive hunting in places, the species is on the Red List of the World Conservation Union (IUCN). It is considered a real rarity among domestic zoos, as it can only be found in Debrecen.
Like the other residents, the piglets are also waiting for the application of selfless foster parents. Adoption is a great joy for them and a huge help for the institution.
