More smoke-free squares in Amsterdam-West due to high number of smokers
The West district wants to discourage smoking in the coming month. In West the percentage of people who smoke is higher than the average in the whole of Amsterdam. That is why the municipality has decided to turn ten squares into smoke-free zones. “Good development.”
In West, 27 percent of residents smoke. In the heel of Amsterdam, 22 percent smoke. Nationally, the percentage is even lower, at 17 percent. “We are stopping city tober as a moment to make more places smoke-free,” writes district chair Fenna Ulichki in a letter to the district committee.
Play areas
The places are mainly public playgrounds that are often used as squares by schools. Ulichki: “Every child has the right to grow up in a smoke-free environment.” The municipality wants to point people to the smoke-free zones with tiles and signs. Flyers and posters will also be distributed throughout the neighbourhoods.
The following places will become smoke-free zones:
Robert Scottplein, the front and back of the Tijl Uilenspiegel School, Hertspieghelplein, Gibraltarbadje, Cruyff Court Bos en Lommer, Karel Doormanplein, Mercator Playground, Columbus Playground, Bellamypleinbadje, Van Beuningenplein.
A number of residents of West are happy with the action. “That way we can set a good example for the children,” says one. “The more of those smoke-free tiles, the better,” said another.
