“So Saturday is over? asks a customer in front of the checkout. “Yes, ma’am,” the saleswoman replies simply. Since the opening this Thursday, September 29, 2022 of the store Monochrome from 42 rue de la Ganterie, at Rouen (Seine Maritime)buyers parade through the aisles.
They will be the (almost) last since Saturday 1uh October 2022, the Camaïeu brand will shut down all of its stores. This follows the judicial liquidation of the ready-to-wear brand pronounced on Wednesday September 28 by the Commercial Court of Lille.
A total of 512 stores will close, including the three in Rouen, as well as those in Barentin, Mont-Saint-Aignan and Petit-Quevilly. In Le Havre, the French brand also had a store, and another in Montivilliers.
“The Last Opportunity”
The announcement of the closure of the Camaïeu stores was the trigger for Valérie’s move to the store in the center of Rouen. ” I do not go there very often. It was on my way, so I thought it might be the last chance, ”she says. Finally, she leaves without buying, having found nothing to her liking.
In receivership for 2 years
The northern company Camaïeu has gone into receivership, two years after its takeover by its shareholder Hermione people and brands (HPB). By taking over 511 of the brand’s 634 stores in France and some 2,600 employees out of more than 3,100, HPB had given itself two years in 2020 to restore balance to the brand, founded in 1984. HPB had indicated on Monday 26 September having requested an advance of 48 million euros from the State, but Bercy had judged that this request was not “realistic”, the State not being able “in no case to replace the shareholders”. Finally, the Commercial Court of Lille ruled.
Carole is a regular customer of the store. She heard the news on the news a few days ago. His first thought goes towards the salesmen and saleswomen. “It’s sad for the employees. I don’t know if they will be redispatched to other stores in the area. I hope for them,” she comments. Before adding: “It really hurts the heart. “As a regular at the sign, Carole assures us that she will do at least one last lap before the final closure.
When questioned, two saleswomen for their part indicated that they were not authorized to answer our questions. One of them simply confirmed that the number of customers was, this Thursday, September 29, much higher than usual.
