In five years 34 percent more Belgian companies in the Netherlands
There were almost 15 percent more foreign multinationals in the Netherlands in 2020 than in 2015. The number of multinationals with a majority stake in Belgian hands increased by 34 percent. In absolute terms, the increase was the largest within the top 10 countries. Compared to 2015, 390 companies have a Belgian majority interest. The value of these companies is of 2.5 billion euros in 2015 to 4.6 billion euros in 2020. The number of employees at Belgian companies name in the same period from 31 thousand to 50 thousand. Nevertheless, Belgian multinationals remained at a considerable distance from British multinationals in terms of employment: in 2020 there were more than 70 thousand individuals more at British companies.

1 in 3 Belgian companies active in Dutch trade
Wholesale and retail trade remained the sector with the most foreign-owned companies in 2020. Of the 1 528 Belgian multinationals in the Netherlands, 508 were active in the wholesale and retail trade, with an added value of 907 million euros. It mainly companies in non-food, industrial machinery and foodstuffs. The other Belgian multinationals were mainly active in specialist business services, industry and information and communication.
Information and communication and industry greatest added value
In the period 2015 to 2020, the number of companies under Belgian control in the information and communication sector rose to 67 percent. This growth was mainly in the service activities in the field of information technology, such as software development. The Belgian communication and information companies together had an added value of 1.2 billion euros. The Belgian industrial multinationals had the greatest added value in 2020.

Belgian multinationals active in border areas
In addition to the regions (COROP areas) with large cities such as Greater Amsterdam, Groot-Rijnmond, Utrecht and Southeast North Brabant, there were many branches of Belgian multinationals in border areas such as West North Brabant (350 branches), South Limburg (215 branches), Central North Brabant (125 branches) and Zeeuws-Vlaanderen (115 branches). This mainly concerned companies in the wholesale trade, commercial intermediation, retail trade and information technology service activities. Companies owned by more distant countries such as the United States, China and the United Kingdom have registered in the major cities in the Randstad.
