10 euros for San Marino in the UN
The allegory that celebrates the thirty years of the Republic of Titan as an effective member of the UN is the work of the artist Daniela Longo
by Chiara Pasqui | Thanks to its centuries-old history of freedom, neutrality and respect for human rights, the Republic of San Marino on 2 March 1992 became full member of the United Nations. Resolution no. 774 of the UN Security Council, approved by acclamation on February 24 of the same year.
From this date San Marino joined the other agencies as well of the United Nations, which are the maintenance of peace and security, the development of friendly relations between nations, the promotion of respect for human rights, disarmament and economic and social cooperation.
March 2 is more generally a date rich in history: remember the siege of Rome in 537 – during the Gothic War -, the umrat al-qada made by Mohammed in Mecca in 629, while that day, in 986, Louis the Ignavo became king of the Franks. In 1818 the Italian archaeologist Giovanni Battista Belzoni discovers the entrance to the Pyramid of Chefren, Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli – on the day of his 63rd birthday – is elected pope with the name of Pius XII, while in 1949 the first world tour is made by plane non-stop, by James Gallagher, in 94 hours and a minute. And the examples could go on.
Returning to the anniversary of San Marino’s thirty years in the UN, according to legend the stonecutter of Dalmatian origin took refuge on Mount Titano to escape the persecutions of Diocletian against Christians. The foundation of the Republic is thus traced back to 301 AD when a rich woman from Rimini donated that land she owned to a small local community. San Marino, therefore, is the oldest and smallest Republic in the world and, after the Vatican and the Principality of Monaco, the third smallest state.
Because of this entry of the “small” republic among the “great” of the EarthSan Marino has decided to mint a coin for the 30th anniversary of San Marino in the UN, face value 10 euros, in silver proofmaking use of the production lines of the Austrian mint.
Minted at the usual diameter of 34 millimeters and weighing 22.4 grams, the coin has a title of 925 thousandths and is available in 2500 specimens that the Numismatic Philatelic Department markets at source a 44 euros each (plus VAT for Italian customers).
The coin bears the standard obverse with the state coat of arms of Antonella Napolionewhile the reverse of Daniela Longo presents a composition focused on gender equalityconsidered a necessary condition for the maintenance of world peace and prosperity, as well as one of the fundamental human rights.
Many battles have been fought, both on the field and diplomatic, for the achievement and recognition of this supreme right. There EU Charter of Fundamental Rights recognizes, in Article 23, equality between women and men in all fields, including that in matters of employment, work and pay.
The report Women, business and law 2019. A decade of reform of the World Bank examines the evolution of gender equality in the workplace. Women’s employment and entrepreneurship are still affected by inequality today. However, the data of the last decade give us hope, where there are definite improvements. Unanimous and unanimous leadership on the part of women and men, capable of changing and adapting rooted norms and unity is what is needed will be.
See such a reference depicted in a coin Coined for such an important anniversary, it undoubtedly makes the message of peace, harmony and equality that San Marino has always brought to the world even more incisive.
