Bohemian, Hungarian and Jewish cuisine blend with the chef’s imagination and local chefs who over the centuries have been able to create dishes also suitable for the refined palates of the Austro-Hungarian emperors, such as the famous Sacher cakea triumph of chocolate and apricot jam, created by the pastry chef whose name it bears for the prince Von Metternich for whom he works.
For those who do not like chocolate, Austrian cuisine offers a wide variety of desserts to choose from, but one of the most traditional is certainly the Apfelstrudel or apple strudel, sweet apples flavored with cinnamon wrapped in crumbly pastry.

In an Imbiss you can really find everything from sandwiches with beer, up to frankfurters, cold cuts, sweets, and coffee. For those looking for a place to eat street food also recommended by locals, the kiosks lining Vienna are ideal: among those offering higher quality products we can find Bitzingervery close to the Sacher hotel in Albertinaplats and very close to the Opera House to be often a stop for those who go to see a show who often indulge in a snack or a glass of champagne right there.
If you are looking for a wider selection, you cannot miss a visit to the Naschmarkt, the Vienna market where street food reigns supreme among local and ethnic products.
Where to eat in Vienna on a budget
Vienna is not a very expensive city compared to other European capitals, so finding places to spend little without missing out on the most delicious dishes of the Austrian tradition is not difficult.
To enjoy traditional dishes such as goulash, wienerschnitzel, spätzle and much more you can stop by Schmarren and Heindl’s Palatschinkenkuchlin Grashofgasse 4, where dishes from abundant parts cost around € 10.
Large portions and good quality are also part of the restaurant’s more meat-based menu Lueck, which is located in the street from which it takes its name, and where it is possible to taste without spending a fortune also sweet knödel, cinnamon rolls and strudel. If, on the other hand, you are looking for delicious sweets at a low price, it is a must to visit the pastry shops Demel, Gerstner or Kurkonditorei Oberlaa.
