The Republic of Moldova must increase its defense capacity, given that Russia does not respect its neutrality, President Maia Sandu said on national television on Wednesday, according to Sky News.
Maia Sandu: The Republic of Moldova must increase its defense capacity
This year, Moldova submitted an application to join the European Union and strongly condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The breakaway region of Transnistria is home to Russian troops and peacekeepers, and the country relies heavily on Russian energy.
“Moldova is a neutral country, … but now Russia does not respect our neutrality, maintaining its army on the territory of Moldova. Therefore, we must not strengthen the defense capacity”, declared Maia Sandu.
The nation allocated just over 1 billion lei ($196.97 million) – or 0.45% of its gross domestic product – for defense spending this year.
