Two open investigations
It was 4:45 p.m. Monday when the 42-year-old man showed up at the police station in the 15th arrondissement, in the north of Marseille, where he caused trouble with his erratic and aggressive behavior, the prosecution said.
“Accompanied outside, he took out a knife and threatened to kill himself before running off towards a wholesale market, followed by several police officers, joined by a patrol. The individual again threatened to kill himself. slit his throat. To make him drop his weapon, a police officer fired twice at the ground near the individual who rushed towards him threatening him. A second police officer then used his weapon and hit the individual on the ‘abdomen,’ the prosecution said.
Two investigations have been opened. The first for “contempt, rebellion and violence with a weapon against a person holding public authority” was appointed to the departmental security. “It aims to establish the course and the exact circumstances of the acts committed by the man injured by the police shooting,” said the prosecution.
The second investigation for “violence with a weapon by a person holding public authority and attempted voluntary homicide” was entrusted to the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN).
“The two police officers in question were heard in this context under the regime of police custody. The police custody was then lifted,” said the prosecution.
