The main objectives of the HR inspiration award are exceptional projects of human innovative solutions in the field of resource management. The competition was organized for the third time in a row by a professional interest association HRComm, which has more than 140 members and whose key role is to inspire, support, promote and bring HR innovations to the business world and society. NN Slovakia entered the competition for the first time, with an innovative project of a 4-day working week. The project won the HR Public Award.
Up to 22 registered projects from various segments qualified for the 3rd year of the HR inspiration award. There were representatives from the manufacturing, financial services, energy, FMCG, IT or Telco industries. The common denominator of all applicants was an innovative approach to problem solving or a possible change in corporate culture and human resources management.
“The HR inspiration award is intended to serve as a motivation for HR department employees not to be afraid to come up with new ideas, despite the fact that the success of adopting an innovation in an organization does not always depend on its quality, refinement or contribution to the organization, but often depends on the attitude of the members of the organization towards .” to the innovative solution itself, i.e. to change,” with Ľudmila Guerin, president of HRcomm.
It is awarded in two competitive competitions every year. The first is the CEO Award, which is decided by an expert jury made up of Slovak business leaders. The second competition category is the HR Public Award, which provides HR based on the general public’s vote. In the 3rd year of the competition, this prize was awarded to NN Slovakia and its project “NNáš new style of work”. In NN, you can choose whether you will work 4 or 5 days a week.
A four-day working week is already a reality in Slovakia
“We had been developing the idea of a 4-day work week since 2020. Initially, it went through various test phases and an approval process, before we permanently introduced the 4-day week as one of the work regimes. Our main goal was to evaluate NN’s high degree of work flexibility. and the professional public,” he says Miroslava Jandorfová, director of human resources at NN Slovakia.
At NN Slovakia, each employee can choose for himself whether he will work in a 4-day or standard 5-day regime. You can choose to work from Monday to Thursday or from Tuesday to Friday. This gives the employee three consecutive days of rest and regeneration along with the weekend. The company conditions the possibility of working in a 4-day working regime by maintaining high-quality services for clients and business partners, as well as meeting business goals. The introduction of a 4-day working week preceded the reduction of the weekly labor pool to 38.75 hours. The labor pool is then recalculated between 4 or 5 working days with the salary being maintained without its reduction.
The new working regime is especially appreciated by the employees of NN Slovakia. In an internal survey, up to 83% of respondents (220 people participated) confirmed that their work-life balance had improved. 70% of respondents consider the introduction of a new working regime a positive step.
The results of the annual testing also showed that in NN SR there was an increase in the level of employee engagement and an overall improvement in the area of management due to the need to harmonize different work regimes and mutual substitutability in individual departments.

Current trends in HR
The shortened working week is not the only innovation with which NN Slovakia enters the labor market: “In our company, we care a lot about the personal development of our colleagues. We invest intensively in the development of key skills in the field of data, technology, digitization and customer orientation. This year, we also introduced the unique TaleNNt program with financial support for the individual growth of colleagues who have shown the desire and the need to work on their personal development. We are also strongly devoted to a topic that moves the whole of Europe – the area of diversity and the inclusion of all colleagues, and in Slovakia we are the Ambassadors of the Diversity Charter Slovakia. We promote absolute equality of employment opportunities for all people. We actively support the ideas of gender equality, we founded WomeNN Club, we integrate the handicapped, expats from Ukraine and last but not least, we organize thematic workshops to break down prejudices In April this year, we launched a grant program for employees to support local communities, civic associations or individuals. We help people take care of what matters most to them in and in their own lives,” adds M. Jandorfová.
