Experts advise church on sustainability day
die Archdiocese of Salzburg organized the first “Sustainability Day”. The aim was to raise awareness among the employees and to create energy-saving guidelines for parishes, the archdiocese announced on Tuesday in a broadcast. The archdiocese was supported by experts in the implementation of this instance. Among others, the well-known Nuremberg Jesuit and climate activist P. Jörg Alt, the energy advisor to the Archdiocese of Salzburg, Michael Hofstätter, and the coordinator of the “Salzburg 2050” project, Fabian Wacht, had their say. As part of the project, the state and archdiocese are striving to achieve climate neutrality and energy autonomy by 2050, among other things.
The project not only envisages a sustainability day to raise awareness within the church, but also technical measures such as building renovation, heating replacement, the purchase of electric vehicles or the generation of electricity from renewable energy sources. Especially in parishes, energy can be saved effectively and creatively, according to the archdiocese of their broadcast.
The starting point for various measures should be the energy guidelines for parishes that were created on Sustainability Day. “Unlike conventional guidelines, we want to enter into a dialogue with those responsible on site and offer space for space, measures for explanations and help,” emphasized Michael Hofstätter, energy advisor to the Archdiocese of Salzburg. The first step is to determine the actual electricity and heating requirements, from the vicarage to the church. Almost a third of the energy costs would currently flow into the operation of the heating systems in places of worship in winter. Here you can find creative alternatives, says the energy manager.
