Bulgaria still does not have a national program for sexual and reproductive health – Highlights from the program
Rositsa Kratunkova from “Doctors of the World” association
Despite the discussions since 1993 with the participation of experts, national services, non-governmental organizations and UN structures and programs in Bulgaria, there is still no national program for sexual and reproductive health (SRH) adopted. Therefore, a coalition of non-governmental, governmental and international organizations is initiating a series of events to lead to the development and adoption of such a program.
This is noted by the “Doctors of the World” association, which on September 28 is the main organizer of conferencededicated to access to sexual and reproductive health and rights.
The event will be held with a number of partners at the French Institute in Bulgaria, Sofia (Slaveikov Square).
“Doctors of the World” is headquartered in Sliven and has been operating since 2004. An increase in interest in the services provided is noticeable, Rositsa Kratunkova from the organization told Radio Sofia:
“The need for such sexual and reproductive care is all over Bulgaria. There is also such a program in Sofia, it is financed by the Capital Municipality, but it is implemented in one hospital for a certain group of people and is little known, it is not popularized..”
Kratunkova pointed out that Bulgaria is in first place in the lower union in terms of the number of abortions per capita, as well as among the first places in diseases such as cervical cancer, breast cancer, etc.
She points out that the right to desired termination of pregnancy must be exercised legally so that there are no risks. The legalization of abortions does not lead to an increase in their number, according to world statistics, Kratunkova also said.
She cites global data, according to which about 270 million women do not have the necessary affordable contraception. Over 40,000 women die every year due to illegal abortions in poor conditions.
