ALL ANTWERP: “Becoming an ambulance is a childhood dream of mine” (Antwerp)
Every weekday our reporter and photographer pick a casual passer-by off the street for a nice conversation. Want everyone has a story. And certainly in Antwerp. Today: Kasper Moortgat (24).
“I work as a courier. I’ve been doing that for a little over a year now. It’s kind of a student job. In night school I study to become an ambulance nurse. As a courier I can already gain a little experience behind the wheel. The company I work for is responsible for the transport of works of art for art dealers. So I transport the best expensive items with my van. Paintings, framing, glassware: a little bit of everything.”
“I don’t live in Antwerp, I’m from Ghent. But as a courier I come here weekly. Do I find it difficult in Antwerp? Not at all. Antwerp is a breeze, if you know that I’m used to it by now. We also deliver there. Then I drive there and back in one day. That’s pretty tough. Paris is not exactly the most pleasant city to work in and certainly not to drive in. It is very hectic there.”
“This job, combined with my studies, is sometimes difficult, but I’m done with it within a good three months. My goal is to become a full-time nurse. would be a childhood dream come true.”
“It is especially helping people, being able to plan something in someone’s life, that appeals to me so much about this job. The fact that you can also drive as a priority is a nice bonus. As an ambulance nurse you mainly learn the basics: resuscitate, administer oxygen, that sort of thing. For example, you must be a nurse to administer. That’s a goal for later. I’ll start at the beginning.”
