World record marathon: Herzog finished 21st
Sports
The long-distance runner Peter Herzog from Saalfelden (Pinzgau) showed a strong performance at the Berlin marathon on Sunday. He finished 21st in a world-class field. Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge from Kenya ran his next world record – with two hours, one minute and nine seconds.
At two hours, twelve minutes and 16 seconds, the man from Salzburg stayed just over two minutes above his personal best.
Kipchoge quickly breaks the two-hour wall
At first it even looked as if the Kenyan Kipchoge might become the first person to undercut the two-hour mark in an official race. Three years ago, the two-time Olympic champion in Vienna was the first person to stay under two hours over the classic distance. However, since this run was not open to the public and took place under laboratory conditions, the time of 1:59:40 hours is not considered a world record.
Kenyans from the start the locomotive
After some rain during the night, the external conditions at the start in Berlin at 9.15 a.m. with cloudy skies, mild temperatures and hardly any wind were very favorable for a fast race. Led by his pacemakers, Kipchoge set a world record pace from the start and was 40 seconds below the previous record after a third of the distance. Only Ethiopian outsider Andamlak Belihu was able to follow, but was then left behind – more on that in sport.ORF.at (09/25/2022)
