Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa spoke to journalists during a meeting with Portuguese emigrants and Portuguese descendants in San Diego, California, the first point of a five-day visit to the West Coast of the United States of America.
Asked if Portugal can be considered a “California of Europe”, the head of state replied that his predecessor, Aníbal Cavaco Silva, said that “at the time it seemed a somewhat similar idea, when it was not a predecessor”.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Portugal is “the California of Europe in the digital and renewable energy sectors and “in the sense that there is a development of energy from home tourism”, but also the differences in demographic and economic terms.
