At the heart of the summer preparation, a few defeats had sown doubt. What could this be worth? Caen Handball largely renewed and extremely rejuvenated? Did his rookies, who had little playing time at the top level, really live up to the demanding Proleague ? Hadn’t Caen’s leaders been too bold in their desire to practically start from scratch? Three games later, the response is startling. Between its two victories over Saran and Nancy, relegated from Starligue, Caen crushed Besançon, after an extremely unbalanced duel.
Champagne and discipline
The Vikings win and they do it in style. The “champagne handball” demanded by Thomas Lamora, president of the club, is not lacking in sparkling. At the same time, the discipline displayed by the players is far from trivial given their youth. “We had a few questions, admits coach Roch Bedos, whose new partnership he is forming with Romain Guillard is working wonderfully. On a signed players who had potential but who lacked playing time, therefore confidence. Confidence is important in a young group because it releases carelessness. The first game does a lot of good. We are reaping the fruits of our labor. »
Determining Alan Santos
In this set, everyone pulls out of the game, starting with the centre-halves. Hugo Jullian and Francisco Pereira have already scored 28 goals between them in three games, in addition to distilling a number of assists. Émilien Deschamps continues to wow the gallery in his new role as fullback. The very young Samuel Vedié, called up to the France U19 team, shows that he is not just a promise for tomorrow. Yannis Mancelle is already installed in his chair as top scorer, Gautier Crepel defends hard in addition to scoring decisive goals and Alan Santos is shooting at 39% saves.
“Everyone came to us a little high”
The picture is very positive, but what is even more so is that it comes with a “very significant margin for improvement”, according to the Caen coach. “Down to earth. There are gaming areas that smoke. Three matches shouldn’t be enough to develop definitive conclusions, however.
The championship is long. We were a bit in the unknown, everyone took us a bit high. Today, we will be much more studied. We will have to work a little more and be more solid on our bases. But on a group which is ambitious and which wants. We are right with them.
Leader in the company of Bordeaux, promoted very ambitious, Caen does not forget to “savor” while remaining “humble”. “There is an ambitious club but which has its feet on the ground, which works. One year from the start of the future Palais des Sports, Caen Handball has done well so far.
