ANO wins in most regional cities, Prague is close to counting — ČT24 — Czech Television
Traditionally, election battles for big cities – including Prague and Brno – are closely watched. Here, however, it regularly takes many hours to count the votes cast, and this time is no different. In Brno, almost 99 percent of all precincts were counted after 11:30 p.m., in Prague over 89 percent.
It is already clear in a number of regional cities. The ANO movement is winning in Olomouc, Hradec Králové, Karlovy Vary, Ústí nad Labem, Zlín, Jihlava, Pardubice and Ostrava. The party won in all cities even four years ago. In Pilsen, ANO’s victory in 2018 was probably the opposite.
On the contrary, in České Budějovice, after counting more than ninety-one percent of precincts, the ODS led with more than 29 percent of the votes ahead of ANO (over 24 percent). She kept her lead. In Brno, after more than 92 percent of precincts were counted, the candidate Together (ODS and TOP 09) led with almost 25 percent of the votes ahead of ANO with less than 21 percent of the votes obtained.
In the municipal elections this year, for example, the head of the Office of the President of the Republic Vratislav Mynář (SPOZ), who was once again sent by the voters to the Osvětiman council in the Uherskohradišť region, succeeded. He figured in the second position of the winning candidate called Osvětimany, who won 27.06 percent of the votes in the township.
Přísaha with leader Robert Šlachta won the elections in Pohořelice in Brno. The movement, which was founded by a former policeman, ran for the first time in municipal elections. In Šlachtov’s native Pohořelice, they won 41.29 percent of the votes.
Four years ago, ANO was the most successful of the party
The overall victory in the municipal elections is defended this year by the opposition movement ANO, which four years ago received 16.8 percent of the vote and was most successful in large cities. Second was ODS (14.9 percent of the vote) and third was Pirates (9.3 percent).
However, thanks to gains in smaller towns and villages, the KDU-ČSL (3,654) won the most municipal mandates in 2018, ahead of the STAN and SLK movements (together 2,749) and the ODS (2,600). Four years ago, ČSSD received 1955 representatives, ANO 1684, KSČM 1470. 454 representatives were elected for TOP 09, 358 for Pirates and 161 for SPD. In most large cities this year, the victory was defended by ANO, which occupied 14 of the 26 mayoral seats.
However, most of the seats in the councils were occupied last time by traditionally independent candidates and their associations, given that they also run in small municipalities where parties do not have candidates. Four years ago, they received roughly a quarter of all votes and occupied 44,367 representative seats. 195,214 candidates wanted to be municipal representatives. With regard to roughly 62,000 seats in the councils of municipalities, cities or city districts, on average, roughly one in three of them succeeded.
Officially, the results of the municipal elections will be published after Monday’s discussion by the State Election Commission, probably on Tuesday in the Collection of Laws. From the following day, a ten-day period will begin to elapse, during which voters or candidate parties can file complaints with the administrative courts.
