The mirror of diversity – startled the II. Nationality Days in Debrecen
The nationalities living in the seat of Hajdú-Bihar county have brought an amusement park whirlwind to the city’s pedestrian zone: the wurstli is spinning, the cotton candy is gaining weight, and the balloon animals, like figures pinged on the face, are constantly evolving and coming to life on Csapó Street since Friday afternoon. The II. Nationality Days offers colorful programs to visitors, who were already present in large numbers on the opening day.
Perhaps it is not an exaggeration that diversity will take shape in the coming days, as those interested can get to know the customs, traditions and traditional food of Bulgarians, Greeks, Roma, Romanians, Germans, Ruthenians and Armenians more closely on the streets of Csapó.
There is strength in difference
The official opening of the three-day festival was held on Friday afternoon at the Csapó Street square. Deputy Mayor Diána Széles reminded us of the purpose and motto of the event, according to which it is important that the nationalities living here and the people of Debrecen get to know each other better.
– Let’s bring our own values, the knowledge that lies within us, and give it to the city in order to make Debrecen stronger, more glorious, and more united – waste management officer István Aba-Horváth, president of the EU-Roma National Association, said in his greeting. He pointed out: The municipality of Debrecen has recognized the strength that lies in differences, and supports the cause of nationalities and the disadvantaged not only with words, but also with actions.
“Hungarian, universal culture should be the national values,” stressed Attila Sztojka, government commissioner for Roma affairs and member of parliament. He added: In addition to becoming a serious economic pole city, Debrecen can also become a social pole city.
The event, among many others, welcomes those interested with national food tastings, traditional dance performances and concerts until Sunday.
