Slovenia is planning locations with grid capacity for utility-scale solar power plants
Electric power companies ELES and SODO completed the assessment of network potential and locations for connecting solar power plants above 10 MW to the transmission network and units with a power above 5 MW to the distribution network. In total, it is technically possible to add 1,826 MW.
The review of the capacity of the Slovenian grid network for utility-scale solar power plants is intended primarily for investors and represents a tool for achieving the government’s goal of adding 1 GW of solar energy by 2025. It is also part of a broader government plan. striving for greater use of renewable energy sources.
Prime Minister Robert Golob set the goal of 1 GW of solar energy as one of his priorities in July. The Ministry of Infrastructure, which is responsible for the field of energy, has now published an assessment made with the transmission system operator (OSP) ELES and the distribution system operator (OSO) SODO.
Currently, there are at least 58 locations where it is possible to set up solar power plants with a power of over 10 MW.
On September 14, the government instructed Minister Bojan Kumer to prepare a plan to increase the capacity for the production of electricity from solar energy by 1,000 MW by 2025 in appropriate locations in cooperation with the companies ELES and SODO, the ministry announced.
The review shows that there are currently at least 58 locations in Slovenia where utility-scale solar power plants with a power of over 10 MW can be set up and connected to the transmission network.
The potential is similar in all five power distributions
ELES estimated the total technical potential for the connection of solar power plants at 1,031 MW, the message also states.
The Drava, Sava, Osrednjeslovenska and Murska regions have the greatest potential.
The estimated potential of including photovoltaic facilities in the low-voltage network is 795 MW. All five electric distribution companies would have almost the same share, announced SODO.
The Ministry prepared several draft laws to accelerate investments in renewable energy sources and published them for public hearing. It also published a proposal for a long-term plan to achieve the goals of promoting the production and use of renewable energy sources in the next five years.
