Of the Lure call from London was loud and clear, the answer from Salzburg is now just as clear: “The decisive media and public speculation of the last few days evaluates FC Red Bull Salzburg to the following statement: Christoph Freund is and remains sports director of the ‘Red Bulls’, a move to FC Chelsea doesn’t exist,” Austria’s serial champions reported on Tuesday afternoon. This means that the 45-year-old’s move to the “Blues” is off the table.
“Christoph Freund has been doing excellent work for us for many years and only recently extended his contract until 2026. I can hereby confirm that he will continue to be sporting director of FC Red Bull Salzburg,” said Managing Director Stephan Reiter. “Of course he informed me about Chelsea FC’s interest in him and we exchanged views on this on a personal level and in good conversations. The fact is that he will remain our sporting director.” There was also no formal request from West London in the direction of Salzburg.
Freund himself on Tuesday: “As I have already confirmed in interviews, Chelsea FC was interested in me. When such a big club asks, it not only honors me and the work of FC Red Bull Salzburg, it is of course also a circumstance that entails personal considerations,” admitted the Mozart city’s sporting mastermind. “But I’m with him I’ve come to the conclusion that FC Red Bull Salzburg is the best place for me and that a change is out of the question for me.”
