Prague Market: The building of the former stock exchange will be renovated for 200 million
“After winning a ten-year court case with the former tenant, the removal of black buildings, the first renovations and a successful architectural competition for the public square, we are continuing the revitalization of the market. The reconstruction of the stock exchange will be our biggest investment in the market so far. It is the most luxurious building of the complex, which has been closed for years due to its state of disrepair. This year we will begin to correct this shameful debt from the past,” said Deputy Mayor Pavel Vyhnánek (Praha Sobě).
The stock exchange is in a state of emergency and has been closed for a long time. Reconstruction of the city was planned for several years. The southern extension and the stock exchange extensions are especially in a very bad structural condition. It also refers to a number of static disturbances that threaten the stability of structures and the safety of visitors to the site. In the places of the original south wall, static disturbances of the wooden structures are visible, and wood-decaying fungi were discovered. In the past, several reconstructions and modifications were carried out, but they did not benefit much.
Among other things, the selected companies will carry out demolition work, take care of basic and other structures, repair floors and interior wall surfaces, and build new distribution systems. They will also carry out plumbing work and restore interior decoration, stucco, stone and locksmith elements or doors.
The city had to tender the contract for the repair of the building twice, when it had to cancel it last year. The reason was the published erroneous report of dimensions or technical parameters. In the end, the deadlines for submitting bids also proved to be problematic.
Investment
The capital will invest two to three billion crowns in the repair of the Prague market in Holešovice over the next 15 years. The area will fulfill a cultural, commercial and gastronomic function. There will also be offices, a supermarket and an observation tower. Access will be expanded, new greenery will be planted and rainwater will be collected in underground reservoirs.
The site of the original Prague slaughterhouse was founded in 1895. It functioned as a slaughterhouse until the 1980s, when it began to change into a market. The area was declared a cultural monument.
