Massive blow in Marseille, Toulouse crowned capital of petanque
According to INSEE, Toulouse is the capital of petanque in terms of the number of bowling alleys. With a total of 101 pitches, the pink city is ahead of Reims, then Marseille.
It is a myth that is collapsing. Marseille is no longer the undisputed capital of pétanque. A study by INSEEpublished this Thursday, September 8, entitled “Equipment count in 2021”, enthrones Toulouse as queen of the game. The pink city is the French city with the most bowling alleys.
With 101 bowling alleys selected, Toulouse takes first place on the podium of the best equipped cities in France, ahead of Reims and its 86 bowling alleys. Marseille comes only third with its 77 pitches, just ahead of Paris which has only 10 less. Asked by our colleagues from TF1the Marseillais affirm that “the number does not make the strength” and all reply in chorus: “Forever the first”.
Of the 101 pitches in Toulouse, 66 are lit to allow fans to play all night and 10 are even covered. In Haute-Garonne, we take this hobby seriously. With nearly 10,000 members, this sport has become a must in the department. And, we must not forget, that it was a Toulousain who is behind the latest newborn in the sector: the Cocholed – a luminous jack that allows you to play petanque at night.
