Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning monarch in Great Britain’s history, died on Thursday, September 8, at the age of 96. Buckingham Palace announces that the monarch has died at his Scottish residence at Balmoral Castle, it writes The Guardian.
Prince Charles, 73, heir to the throne since the age of three, is now king and will be officially proclaimed as such at St James’s Palace in London as soon as possible.
The Queen ascended the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change.
With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new king and head of state for 14 Commonwealth kingdoms, it writes. BBC.
All of the Queen’s children traveled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision.
Queen Elizabeth II’s tenure as head of state spanned post-war austerity, the transition from empire to Commonwealth, the end of the Cold War and the United Kingdom’s entry – and withdrawal – from the European Union.
His reign has spanned 15 prime ministers, opening with Winston Churchill, born in 1874, and including Liz Truss, born 101 years later in 1975, and appointed Queen earlier this week.
