Bundesliga: Salzburg succeeds in dress rehearsal for CL start
Noah Okafor put Salzburg, who had started well into the game, ahead after just 13 minutes. Substitute Youba Diarra scored the first deserved final score in the 79th minute with his Bundesliga goal. While the home team celebrated their 30th Bundesliga home win in a row, the WSG suffered their second defeat in a row and slipped back to seventh place.
Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle had to replace the injured Luka Sucic. The Croatian injured his adductors during the final training session on Friday and is also doubtful for Tuesday. 18-year-old Dijon Kameri slipped into the starting XI for him. The WSG had to do without the offensive players Nik Preelec and Sandri Ogrinec. Thomas Silberberger took over the 1: 3 in the previous week against WAC Osarenren Okungbowa and Denis Tomic.
One-way street football in Salzburg
Salzburg initially offered track street football. Fernando tested Ferdinand Oswald in the WSG goal first (6th) and gave the go-ahead for a series of scoring chances. Okafor ran free after a perfect cross from Fernando and scored the deserved lead after 13 minutes. The goal was flagged for offside due to a centimeter decision by the video referee. Amar Dedic had another chance two minutes later but was denied by Oswald. Two minutes later it was Okafor’s turn again, Oswald deflected this attempt just wide of the goal.
The constant pressure from Salzburg continued. Kameri fired a long-range shot, but he too found his match in Oswald (22′). The Watteners stayed in the game thanks to their goalkeeper. However, it took the guests a long time before relief attacks came up. Kofi Schulz was responsible for the visitors’ first goal (28′), but missed a lot. Salzburg shifted down a gear after the strong opening phase, but retained control of the game. After 40 minutes, the Jaissle team had 74 percent possession.
Diarra marks the end
The second half began with a great chance to equalize for the WSG. However, Tim Prica was unable to get Zan Rogelj’s sharp cross on target (48′). For Salzburg, the conspicuous Fernando once with his foot and once with his head for the first accents on the offensive after the break. Initially, however, the “bulls” were no longer mandatory. Jaissle reacted to that after 60 minutes with a quadruple substitution and brought in the Bundesliga debutants Lucas Gourna-Douath, Diarra, Benjamin Sesko and Junior Adamu as fresh players.
Maximilian Wöber had a great chance of making the preliminary decision. However, the well-taken free kick from 25 meters was again in good hands with Oswald (65′). Sesko initially failed with a header (78′), before Diarra made the decision with his first Bundesliga goal (79′). Behounek deflected the shot from goalkeeper Oswald. Shortly thereafter, Sesko failed first against Oswald and in the same action alone only against Bacher (81st). The WSG countered again and again, but no longer became a threat to the home side. So it stayed with the deserved and unchallenged 2-0 win for Salzburg.
