Andrei Rublev finished off the Canadian with Russian roots in the fifth set. Five of our tennis players will compete in the fourth round of the US Open. Moreover, three of them are men, and this is already a repetition of the Russian record at the Helmets.
On Saturday, in the USA, cases of the disease of the third round of singles were opened. Five Russians reached this stage – Daniil Medvedev (first seed), Andrey Rublev (9), Karen Khachanov (27), Veronika Kudermetova (18) and Lyudmila Samsonova. The day before, on Friday, everyone except Rublev managed to successfully get tickets to the week of the second Slam. Moreover, the leader of the international rating, Medvedev, went through the grid to a very uncomfortable opponent for himself – Nick Kiryos (23). Just three weeks ago, tennis players met in the second round of the Masters in Montreal, and then the Australian won a strong-willed victory. The total score of personal meetings between them became 3-1 in the use of Nick. Will Medvedev take revenge?
Medvedev will play Kiryos again 3 weeks after the shutdown! US Open spreads and grids
As for Rublev, his third round fight was organized on Saturday. Before him, the Russian made two different matches. In the first round with the chain Serb Laszlo Dzhere, Andrey scored 2:0 in sets, but then he lost the advantage, which happened in the match in the fifth, decisive victory and only tamrval. But in the rescue with the Korean Kwon Son Wu, the Russian acted in a collected manner, brought himself to the court feeling and relatively calmly, without a splash of excessive negative emotions. As a result, Rublev won in three sets and even in the second he hung the “steering wheel” on his opponent.
Andrey’s rival in the third round was Denis Shapovalov, a Canadian with Russian roots. These tennis players are about the same age – 24-year-old Rublev is only a year and a half older than Denis. For the outstanding Shapovalov, the well-deserved ATP title – in Stockholm 2019, entered the top 10 for the first time in the fall of 2020. Denis has a victory over the achievement of such tennis players as Rafael Nadal, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas. Before that, Rublev and Shapovalov met four times in the ATP, and the score was equal – 2-2. He won the Next Gen Finals – 2017 and St. Petersburg-2020, and Denis won Miami and Winston-Salem-2019. By the way, before this US Open, the Russian coach and former top-10 player Mikhail Youzhny returned to the Shapovalov team. RTF President Shamil Tarpishchev said before the match: “In a meeting with Shapovalov, maybe Andrei has a slightly higher chance of success. Here the issue comes to the fore steadily, and Shapovalov himself plays with mistakes, ”Tarpishchev’s word was given to TASS.
The match immediately went into a stubborn and equal struggle. The tennis players clearly kept their instructions until the ninth game, which Shapovalov failed in – he made several mistakes and made two doubles. Rublev made a break – 5:4 and immediately filed for a set – 6:4. It was revealed that in the first game the Russian was almost not mistaken. In the second set, the decline came already with Andrey. With the score 1:1, Rublev had many inaccuracies in his serve. The opponent took advantage of this and made a break – 2:1, followed by another one – 4:1. This advantage is quite enough to capture Denis to compare the score in sets – 6:2 and 1:1.
The game leveled up again. Tennis players earn break points, but no one has been able to grow by chance. Everything was decided in a tie-break, where Shapovalov worked better – 7:6 (7:3). Denis is only one set before the victory. But he broke the beginning of the fourth installment by making a couple of double faults. Rublev led with a break, but the Canadian literally clung to the opponent’s serve, Andrey was born to take risks and make mistakes. As a result, the score was equalized – 3:3. After such a failure, Rublev even took out all his anger on the racket. Perhaps this outburst of emotions helped the Russian a little. Soon he made a break – 5:4. However, at the beginning of the beginning of a stubborn struggle, the game lasted 10 minutes. Emotions overflowed. Shapovalov was especially nervous. After each failure, he loudly appealed to his boxing, and sometimes cursed obscenely, and in Russian. Denis had two break points, he played four set points, but on the fifth, Rublev put the squeeze on his opponent – 6:4 and 2:2 in sets. In the fifth installment there was a stubborn struggle, although both tennis players have chances to serve the opponent. Finally, in the ninth game, Rublev made a break – 5:4 and promised the result for the match. He did not succeed. Andrey didn’t realize the tribol match and gave this game to Shapovalov. It came to a super-tie-break, which plays up to 10 points. This time the Russian was lucky – 6:4, 2:6, 6:7 (3:7), 6:4, 7:6 (10:7) in 4 hours and 11 minutes of fighting.
So Andrei Rublev finished off the Canadian with Russian roots in the fifth extreme set. Andrei became the fifth Russian in the second week of the US Open. Moreover, three of them are representatives of the men’s singles – Rublev, Medvedev and Khachanov. Together they repeated the record of Russia on the Helmets.
