The large square of Borgo Maggiore is ready to welcome runners from ten nations, women and men who Sunday 4 September (departure at 9 am) will give life to the great party of the third edition of the “Ekiden of San Marino”the relay marathon, e “San Marino Marathon”the individual marathon.
In the “Ekiden” five competitors from each team will share the 42.195 km of the marathon in the following stages: 6.03 km, then 12.06 km, then 6.03 km and 12.06 km and finally 6.015 km.
The event, organized by the company Athletics San Marinois approved by the Fsal (San Marino Athletics Federation) and enjoys the patronage of the State Secretariats “Work and Sport”, “Education and Culture”, “Territory and Environment” and “Tourism”, the Giunte di Castello di Borgo Maggiore and San Marino as well as the San Marino Olympic Committee.
Route-show
The race uses a circular city track, of substantial 6 km and of high environmental value, which will allow participants to travel through the suggestive restaurant pedestrian tunnels of the old railway, the pine forest of the Montecchio natural park and the Sottomontana panoramic road, where the view opens onto the Adriatic Sea.
Record to beat
For the most competitive quintets, the reference times are the records of the race held in the 2021 edition (June 27), both signed by GS Gabbi Bologna. The historic Bolognese club won both races (male and female) with the two best performances in the young history of San Marino Ekiden: 2: 26’27 “for men (with Diego Gaspari, Vincenzo Scuro, Fabio Corradini, Vasil Matvichuk and Francesco Tornati) and 3: 03’00 ”for women (with Monica Freda, Alice Cuscini, Francesca Patuelli, Anna Spagnoli and Valeria Baldassarri).
Also in this third edition there is the possibility of running the entire marathon alone, which in 2021 offers two exciting duels, between Lorenzo Lotti (first in 2: 45’14) and the legendary “King Giorgio” Calcaterra (second in 2: 48’09 “), and between Francesca Bravi (3: 05’38”) and Federica Moroni (3: 08’48 “), with Denise Tappatà, then new Italian champion of the 100 km, completing the podium in 3: 10 ’38 “.
New: the non-competitive
Alongside the relay runners and individual marathon runners this year other enthusiasts will also run, on a non-competitive basis, who will be able, at their discretion, to cover one or more laps of the track, using the refreshment-athletes and the four water sources present on the route .
«With this further modality of participation we aim at two very numerous targets – explained the organizer Samuel Guiduccipresident of Track & Field San Marino – on the one hand we like to offer newbies to the race the opportunity to “taste” the race-climate in safety and in the air of a true marine party that reigns in the “San Ekiden”, on the other we know that there are many runners who are preparing half marathons and autumn marathons and for them a training-test on 18 – 36 km can be very useful, as well as being able to carry it out on a track that can be closed to traffic within the possibility of having refreshments and health care .”
The inscriptions will reopen on the morning of Sunday 4 September, from 7:30 to 8:30, in Piazza Grande in Borgo Maggiore (RSM).
