Heavy vegetation fire in Haren: 8,000 square meters destroyed by the flames | Brussels
hairThe fire that started on Friday evening on a meadow along the Haachtsesteenweg in Haren and Machelen is under control, but the extinguishing will still take a few hours. This is reported by the Brussels fire brigade. About 8,000 square meters were destroyed by the fire, but no one was injured.
“The brand was created around 5 p.m.,” said Walter Derieuw, spokesman for the Brussels fire brigade. “The Brussels fire brigade came to the scene and was assisted by the emergency zones of Flemish Brabant and East Flanders to extinguish.”
Due to the fire, Haachtsesteenweg was closed to traffic between 17:35 and 18:15. For a moment the berm of the railway also threatened to catch fire, but it could still be extinguished in time. It was interrupted for a short time between the stations of Diegem and Haren, but has started again, reports Infrabel.

“There was no danger to homes in the area at any time. We have advised local residents to keep windows and doors closed,” says Derieuw.

There were also four horses present on the pasture. “It concerns the horses that pull the carriages for tourists on the Grote Markt”, says Derieuw. Fortunately, the horses escaped with the fright and were directed by the fire brigade to a parking lot with a view.

By about 7:30 p.m., the brand was fully under control, but it will take several more hours. “The ground is still bone dry and we must avoid any resurgence,” the fire service spokesman continued. “Some haystacks also need to be pulled out completely to make sure they are completely extinguished.
“The civil defense drone of Brasschaat is also present here to make thermal images. This way we know which parts still need to be extinguished,” said the speech. Derieuw has had no influence on air traffic. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
