The European statistics agency Eurostat published this week the data concerning the beer trade on the European market. While the Netherlands remains the leading exporter, Belgium ranks second. France, it prefers imports. European countries also produced beer. In 2021, European Union countries produced more than 33 billion liters of alcoholic beer. Production up 3% compared to 2020. And according to Eurostat, total beer production in the EU was equivalent to almost 78 liters per capita. Just like in 2020, Germany remains the leading beer producer in Europe with 7.5 billion litres, which represents 23% of the total production of the European Union. In other words, one in four alcoholic beers is produced in Germany. The European champion was followed in 2020 by Poland (data not available for 2021) with 3.8 billion liters produced. Spain brings up the rear again, the country having produced 3.7 billion liters last year. Finally, at the foot of the podium, we find the Netherlands with 2.5 billion liters produced in 2020 (data not available for 2021). These four European countries represent 52% of total beer production in the European Union. Finally, it is interesting to note that the production of non-alcoholic beer has increased by almost 20%. Germany, Spain and the Netherlands are also the biggest producers. Data for Belgium was unavailable. Data published by Eurostat shows that the Netherlands retained its position as the leading exporter of alcoholic beer in 2021. The Netherlands was exported – within the EU and outside – a total of 1.9 billion liters of alcoholic beer in 2021. This represents 21% of total beer exports from the European Union. But Belgium is not far behind with 1.7 billion liters of beer exported, or 19% of EU exports. Germany comes in third place with 1.6 billion litres, or 17% of European exports. Finally, France and the Czech Republic lead the way with 500 million liters each. But to whom do these countries sell the most? The main destinations for these European exports are the United Kingdom (902 million litres, or 22% of extra-EU exports) and the United States (765 million litres, or 19% of extra-EU exports). These countries are followed by Russia (391 million litres), China (340 million) and South Korea (168 million litres). Finally, the European country that imports the most alcoholic beer is France with 800 million litres, i.e. 16% of total EU imports (intra- and extra-EU). Next come Italy and Germany, with nearly 700 million liters (i.e. 13% of total EU imports), followed by the Netherlands (600 million litres, 12% of imports) and Spain (500 million litres, 10% of imports). It should be noted that beer imports from countries outside the European Union are marginal. European countries therefore prefer internal trade. Regarding these extra-EU imports, Member States favored British beer (248 million litres) and Mexican beer (122 million litres). Aurore Dessaigne
