The local is a news publication founded in 2004. It now has 9 local editions in various European countries offering local news in English.
It is mostly aimed at foreign residents who are starting a new life for themselves in a new country. This can be a difficult and confusing life transition for them, so the publication has thought carefully about which news products best meet these needs. In other words, “product thinking” – how useful it is to readers and listeners.
In this week’s podcast, we talk to Paul O’Mahonyeditorial product manager, by Local people Swedish edition. He talks about the central role of different news products in serving their niche audience. That includes article series such as its monthly “What Changes” series, its latest podcast Sweden In Focus and its membership which has grown from 13,000 to 50,000 in the past two years of the pandemic.
