We will target the management of state institutions for corruption cases/ Prosecutors, judges and officers who take bribes or leak information are the most dangerous criminals.
Veronica Dragalin, the new chief anti-corruption prosecutor from the Republic of Moldova, made harsh statements in the first press conference held after assuming the mandate. Dragalin stated that prosecutors, judges and officers who take bribes or leak information are the most dangerous criminals, but also that there is so much corruption in the Republic of Moldova, it is not possible to investigate and convict all cases. The chief prosecutor also said that he will target the management of state institutions for corruption cases.
“We must discourage corruption in the judicial system, in the Parliament, in the Government, in the leadership of the political parties, but also in the municipal and local councils. State control bodies, or better said, their leadership, current and former, will be in our crosshairs for corruption cases. In every field there must be living examples of how the corrupt end up in prison,” stated Dragalin, quoted by The Guard newspaper.
“Until now, in the Republic of Moldova, there has never been a genuine fight to eradicate corruption, by bringing criminal responsibility. There was so much corruption in the Republic of Moldova, it is not possible to investigate and prosecute all these cases. (…) We have a very large number of files and a very small number of prosecutors and officers”, Dragalin also stated, who also spoke of “criminals in the system:
“Criminals in the system, I mean prosecutors, judges and officers, are the most dangerous criminals. That includes not only accepting or soliciting bribes to affect cases, but also illegally leaking information that obstructs justice, which are criminal offenses. (…) We cannot allow such people to remain in our system. Final convictions will take time. The first tangible results will not come overnight and maybe not even in a few months. I, as the head of this institution, will dedicate all the resources (which are no) at my disposal to investigate such types of abuse and corruption, and I promise you that for such criminals we will demand the harshest measures and criminal penalties that do not allow . the law. This is the first key priority that we have identified in the first 15 days”, said the new chief prosecutor of the Republic of Moldova, Veronica Dragalin, who began her mandate on August 1.
