Prague – A new bistro has been created at the tramway roundabout in Prague’s Dlabačov in Prague 6, which complements the decommissioned T3 tram, and cultural events will be held there in the near future. Representatives of the capital city told journalists. According to the city councilor Hana Třeštíková (Praha Sobě), the project is part of the city’s efforts to revive unused but attractive corners of the metropolis.
The Dlabačov loop and the neighboring Královka loop were created in 1948 and, together with connected footbridges, served to transport the participants of the All-Sokol gatherings and later Spartakiads to the Strahov stadium. They were decommissioned at the end of the 1980s. The footbridge leading from the turnpike in Strahov, which was originally intended for demolition, has now been used to set up a bistro toilet.
According to Deputy Mayor Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě), the bistro follows the decision not to demolish the footbridge, which, according to him, is structurally unique due to the use of the so-called mushroom structure. “The CTU Faculty of Civil Engineering prepared an opinion for us that the footbridge is unique from a structural point of view and that it is important to preserve it,” he said. He added that after the repairs, the footbridge is once again passable in the direction of Strahov.
The city organization Kreativní Praha was in charge of using the place, which put out a competition for the operator. Ondřej Kužílek and Jan Řídký succeeded in this, choosing a concept that combines gastronomy with culture. “We started with gas, but very quickly we want to follow up with cultural things, whether I organize amateur theater, yoga exercises or small musical performances,” said Kužílek. He added that he appreciates on the spot the connection of the Prague Castle area, student dormitories in Strahov and residential Břevnov.
For now, the bistro is open on weekends between 10:00 and 21:00. It offers beer of its own brand brewed in the Kladno brewery and a menu of meals that, according to Kužílek, aims for quality. Tourist tram line 42 now passes through the loop, which, according to Třeštíková, will enable not only locals but also tourists to discover the bistro.
According to the councilor, the city is looking for another similar corner that could be made more attractive. It started, for example, in the Vltavská subways, where a sports complex was created and further development is planned. A larger investment would be needed to use the former Orionka depot in Vinohrady. Scheinherr added that if the concept proves successful in Dlabačov, the neighboring Královka loop could be used in a similar way.
There are several businesses connected with trams in the metropolis. The restaurant is, for example, at the nearby Střešovice train station, where it is located in the public transport museum. At the loop in Hostivař, there is a company with the “transport” name První Pivní Tramway, and on Wenceslas Square there is a cafe in two historic trams. The Prague transport company also offers the option of renting historic trams with a sightseeing ride, during which food and drink can be provided.
