The K group is preparing to save electricity by planning to reduce the lighting in its stores and adjust the heating
The K group has mapped new ways it could reduce electricity use in its stores this fall and winter. Proactive measures aim to reduce electricity consumption peaks and prevent possible electricity shortages in Finland. The K group estimates that it can save electricity by up to 15-20 percent from time to time with temporary extraordinary measures.
The trade’s share of Finland’s total electricity consumption is about 3-4%. Lighting and refrigeration equipment consume the most electricity in stores.
“Obviously, as a large operator, we have to do our part when we work together to save electricity. We believe that with certain exceptional measures, we can temporarily reduce K Group’s electricity consumption by up to 15-20%, if electricity production in Finland requires it,” says Antti KokkonenK group’s real estate technical services.
“Cutting total electricity consumption in Finland by 5-10% would have a big impact. By planning and preparing together, we can prevent electricity shortages in Finland next winter, says Kokkonen.
The K group has purposefully reduced its energy use for decades. Central measures in our grocery stores have been the renewal of refrigeration equipment and lighting. A more recent innovation are our heat recycling systems that utilize waste energy.
In preparation for a decrease in the availability of electricity, we have been looking for new, exceptional measures to save electricity.
“We are able to reduce our electricity consumption even further by utilizing automation in the heating of the stores and the adjustment of store and advertising lighting, to name a few examples. Our store uses energy-saving heat recycling systems, which are basically large heat pumps that can be directed to use less electricity and more district heating if necessary, Kokkonen says.
K Group’s goal is to achieve carbon neutrality by 2025 and to cut the emissions of its own operations to zero by 2030. Increasing energy efficiency is one of the key means of achieving these goals.
