Therefore, THMP changes more than 35,000 of them annually as a precaution
The management of public lighting does not only include the inspection, cleaning and repair of masts and lamps, but also their gradual renewal. In order to prevent a situation where the lamps will not light due to exceeding their useful life, Prague, through its municipal company Technology of the City of Prague (THMP), preventively replaces the discharge lamps in more than a hundred light points every day.

“Magistrate hl. m of Prague concluded an agreement with THMP, which states that the masts may not exceed the non-functioning limit, which is set at 2% of non-illuminating or poorly lit light points for a period of 14 days. Even thanks to the regular preventive replacement of light sources, the THMP manages to be exceeded in the long term, public lighting thus stays below 1% of non-lighting lamps,” said Jan Chabr, head of the council. m of Prague, which has public lighting in its charge.
The exchange is not random and always takes place in one location, most recently in Strakonická or 5. května streets, for example. “The technicians replace the old discharge lamp with a new one at the end of its useful life, and they also check and repair the passport card of each mast. This serves us as a source of service information – what type of light fixture the mast has, how big it is or what the cable connection looks like. In this way, we will take advantage of the fact that the technology does not go to the mast again,” added the chairman of the board of directors of THMP Tomáš Jílek, who also highlights the direct connection of the tablets of the field crews directly to the company’s databases.
Preventive replacements will affect approximately 3,400 public lighting poles every month. Each light source should be renewed within five years, which is the lifetime guaranteed by the manufacturer. Due to the total number of more than 136,000 public lighting lamps, this work is carried out the most and all the time. A breakthrough and cost savings will only be brought by new, so-called LED lamps, the supplied lifespan is more than 25 years. There are less than 10,000 of these in the capital so far. THMP plans to replace them completely in the next 13 years, according to the financial possibilities of the municipality.
