Tabitha Chawinga delighted to sign for Inter Milan
Malawi striker Tabitha Chawinga says she is very excited to play for women’s football club Inter Milan.
The striker said this after being unveiled on Thursday when she signed a one-year loan deal with Inter from Chinese Women’s Super League football Wuhan Jiangda FC.
” I am so happy. It was my dream, of course, to sign for this great Inter Milan team, so I’m really happy. This is a very big opportunity for me because every player dreams of playing for a big team like Inter. It’s a very big team all over the world. It’s very important because I have to achieve a lot more in my career,” she said.
Inter Milan signed Tabitha until 2022-23. She left behind her younger sister Temwa who is also one of Wuhan Jiangda’s main strikers. A few seasons ago, Tabitha left Jiangsu Suning, another Chinese Super League team, to reunite with Temwa in Jiangda.
Tabitha launched her career at DD Sunshine FC before Temwa followed suit to sign for the Lilongwe-based side. The 26-year-old eventually joined Swedish league third division side Krokom/Dvarsatts IF in 2014, becoming the first Malawian footballer to sign for a European side.
Tabitha scored 39 goals in 14 games although she missed five games as she was not yet 18, which is the minimum age for professional footballers. She is now ready to show her talent in Italy, where women’s football is growing by leaps and bounds.
The Malawi star continued to rise in Sweden where she signed for second tier Kvarnsveden, helping them earn promotion to the main league called Damallsvenskan after scoring 43 goals. In the first season in the top flight, injuries saw Tabitha’s tally drop as she settled for 15 goals, as Kvarnsveden finished ninth in the 2016 season.
The following year, Tabitha scored 25 goals to attract the attention of big clubs in England and France, but she settled for Jiangsu Suning of the Chinese Women’s League, largely for financial gain during the 2017-18 season. Before signing for Suning, Tabitha had won accolades including Damallsvenskan as 2017 striker of the year, even though her side were relegated.
Before leaving Sweden for China, Tabitha recommended Temwa to the same Swedish team. After one season, Temwa followed her older sister to China.
