In the 4th preliminary round of the European Conference League, Slavia Prague challenged Raków Częstochowa in Poland as the last opponent standing before their participation in the basic group of the competition. The Polish opponent showed that it is at least as motivated to progress as the opponent. In the 29th minute, Ivi López scored the first big chance against the visitors and they kept their lead for the entire half.
Nevertheless, Slavia did not lay down their weapons and leveled the score with a surprising shot from the center of Tomáš Holeš in the 60th minute. However, the Polish opponent was able to counter by immediately increasing the lead to 2:1 with the penetration of Tudor from the set-piece after the goal. For the rest of the match, the Vršovič team pressured their opponent as much as possible, but the Polish club, whose specialty is penetrations, continued to be dangerous and the opponent did not allow anything major. The Slavists therefore have to accept a 1:2 defeat.
The need to advance
Slavia Prague continues its straight path to the basic group of the European Conference League. The last step is a double match with Polish vice-champion Raków. Vršovič were in a relatively good mood, because after the demolition of the Gibraltar team St. Joseph’s managed even the much tougher Panathinaikos and did not hesitate even in the league at Jablonec.
Raków Częstochowa has also taken care of motivation. The defeat of Kazakhstan’s Astana and Spartak Trnava without conceding a goal is the closest to the main group of the European Cup in practically history. , for which the injured Czech defender Tomáš Petrášek currently plays. The team is literally experiencing a renaissance, which he would like to extend. In turn, they would like to at least repeat last year and progress to the elimination phase of the basic third European competition.
The excellent Czech Moses Usor helped the team’s success right from the start, the captain Tomáš Holeš and also the carded Eduardo Santos returned to the lineup. The problems on the right wing of the defense were sealed by Ivan Schranz. The opponent’s biggest offensive weapon was supposed to be the Spanish footballer Ivi López, who scored 20 goals last year.
Polish leadership
Slavia in black had to defend against Raków’s enthusiastic onslaught in the first five minutes. However, she managed it and fully participated in the dynamic fight, but in the first quarter of an hour, it did not bring clear scoring chances. It wasn’t until the 18th minute that Slavist’s Moses Usor tried to shoot, but he just missed Trelowski’s goal. In the 27th minute, they tried to strike from a break with the help of Schranz’s header, which was deflected from the goal line by the home defender.
In just two minutes, however, it became clear why they value striker López in Rakka. In the first serious chance, he first went around Oscar, then Olayinka and finally sent the ball behind Mandousa’s back. Scorched Slavia was outplayed by the Polish team, which subsequently resulted in another threat to López in the 41st minute. However, Mandous was ready this time.
Raków was better on the ball, combined and managed to get into the box, while Slavia, on the other hand, could not even play properly. That’s why the visitors were relieved when referee Saggi blew the whistle for the end of the half with the score unchanged.
Leveling and sobering up
The second half started relatively evenly. In the 54th minute, Usor tried to equalize again, but the home team just missed the goal. But in order for the guests not to forget who is at home in Raków, in the 56th minute, Mandousa’s vigilance was tested again by López. But Slavia did not lay down their arms and, on the contrary, tried to equalize. And in the end, it was captain Tomáš Holeš, who caught the home goalkeeper Trelowski with his shot cross in the 60th minute and leveled the scores.
However, the home footballers came up with a quick response. Immediately after the play-off, the unguarded Tudor got into the penetration and beat the surprised Mandous. From that moment on, Slavia spent more time in Raków’s half, but the secured defense, already famous, did not want to let anyone in to finish. Even Usora’s shot in the setup didn’t change anything. Therefore, the Vršovice team had to deal with a 1:2 defeat and the idea that they will have to perform much better and score more goals in Eden.
