Wenceslas Square burglary: The repeat offender was overcome by the escalators
The police dealt with an unusual situation at the beginning of August – at that time, an unknown man broke into four buildings on Wenceslas Square within a single hour. “He first broke into a hotel, where he lured a guest out of the hotel room under a fictitious legend and then tried to steal his room,” the first case was described by Prague police spokesman Richard Hrdina. Immediately after, the man entered the bookstore, where he broke a glass case and stole several sets of luxury pens.
His next stop was a hotel, where he climbed through the roofs of the building and pryed open the door, only to be interrupted by security. Then he continued to another hotel, where he broke the balcony door and stole a mobile phone from the room.
In the meantime, the police have already arrived at the scene of the first theft, where the users camera records. They immediately began searching for the suspect who was caught on them. It didn’t take long before one of the policemen spotted the crook on the street and went after him.
“He didn’t wait for anything and ran to the metro station Můstek. The suspicious man did not want to be caught at any cost and ran away from the policeman through almost all the corridors in the lobby. Both performed like athletes, and after running down and re-climbing the stairs, running up the escalators and playing hide-and-seek behind the platform pillars, the ten who had more sense and experience won,” said Hrdina.
The pursued man ran onto the escalators, but did not notice that they were going down instead of up. The policeman knew that sooner or later the man would be overcome by the stairs, so he calmly waited downstairs for the exhausted crook to be brought to him, which they did. “The policeman pacified the man and, with the help of a foreign police patrol, they together restricted him in his personal freedom,” said the spokesperson.
The police soon found out that he was a redivisive man who was wanted nationwide – because he avoided starting the sentence, where the court sent him for property crimes. “From the detention that was imposed on him, he went straight to serving his sentence, which can be extended by up to another three years after another appearance in court,” Hrdina added.
