Study inequality social points in access to bike paths in Lisbon
O work on the existence of social inequalities in access to these infrastructures was carried out by Miguel Padeiro, researcher at the Center for Studies in Geography and Spatial Planning (CEGOT) and professor at the Faculty of Arts at UC.
In a press release issued today to the Lusa agency, the UC maintains that the study “confirmed the existence of significant differences between the richest areas of Lisbon, in terms of presence and access to cycle paths and ‘docks’ Gira, the shared bicycle service of the Portuguese capital”.
Having data on the geographic distribution of cycle lanes and Gira docks with an indicator of social vulnerability calculations for each statistical section (in the territory areas, corresponding to several blocks) of Lisbon, the CEGOT researcher concluded that “the geographic areas where the index social vulnerability index is higher (the poorest tend to have worse access than areas with a low social vulnerability index”.
According to the results of Miguel’s study so far shared with the development of sistemavias and cycles performed, unevenly.
The social researcher also observed that, although social disparities in access and quality of service “are partly due to the physical conditions of the territory” — and they are also correlated with a distribution of groups — the small networks were developed for “pre-existing inequalities”.
There is, therefore, the danger of being able to reinforce them, advocated Miguel Padeiro.
The USA.
“They launch yet another alert as public authorities and associations for urban connection and management, given the gains and a public health system of environmental sustainability that bicycles access a network of shared bike paths and can mean”, he added.
The UC recalls the use of reference studies, associating the use of bicycles, increased activity and reduction of obesity, stress, among others, will also contribute to the increase of the daily physical load, “far beyond obesity, stress, among others. others, to increase physical health, which can be much greater than physical health, from greenhouse gases and energy dependence.
“This one presents arguments in favor of expanding cycling infrastructure in Lisbon, but as a study of its measures they are not limited to other measures. expansion is presented in a fairer way, with greater territorial coverage and with a more social perspective”, underlined Miguel Padeiro.
