The Toulouse Labor Exchange, one of the oldest in France, a memory of union activity and working-class culture, has dominated Place Saint-Sernin since 1892. This construction, decided by the Socialist City Council on February 15, 1928, is extended in 1931. It replaced a more modest building which already housed the Union of Haute-Garonne trade unions as well as professional courses training many children (from 13 years old) in trades and industry. The plans were drawn up by the city architect Jean Montariol. The work was awarded to contractor Paul Barthe.
The Toulouse Labor Exchange remains in the program of visits not to be missed in 2022!
The Bourse du Travail, which embodies the history of the labor movement in our city, has always been open to Toulouse residents. The Heritage Days are part of our desire to further broaden their appropriation of this living social heritage.
The curious and enthusiasts will appreciate, in addition to the bas-reliefs on the facade of the building, the period mosaics, the grand staircase, the premises of Radio Mon Païs, the breathtaking and unprecedented view of the St Sernin basilica.
