RTL Today – Luxembourg: ONA accommodates more than 1,000 refugees in its structures
Of the 4,300 Ukrainians who have taken refuge in Luxembourg, 1,072 are currently living in one of the 17 structures of the National Reception Office (ONA).
Of the approximately 45 million Ukrainians, more than 10 million have had to leave their homeland since the start of the war more than five months ago. This is according to the United Nations Refugee Organization. According to the latest information, there are currently nearly 4,300 people in Luxembourg who enjoys temporary protected status.
Of these 4,300 Ukrainians, 1,072 live in one of the 17 structures of the National Reception Office (ONA). Those are 168 fewer people than in mid-July. The rest, more than 3,000 Ukrainian refugees, have either been hosted by individuals or have already left the country.
As announced in mid-July by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the LSAP, Jean Asselborn, there are currently, in addition to Ukrainian refugees, 937 people benefiting from international protection status in this country. Many of them come from Syria or Afghanistan.
-> Immigration: Refugee reception facilities almost saturated in Luxembourg
Fewer and fewer refugees have arrived in Luxembourg from Ukraine. In July, there were not even ten a week. About 100 of the 500 beds are occupied in the first reception structure in Kirchberg, where the newly arrived refugees have gone. But also refugees who lived with private individuals and could no longer stay, are temporarily housed there.
Nearly a third of some 450 beds are occupied in the four emergency accommodation facilities. These people are awaiting a decision from the Directorate of Immigration or their relocation.
700 REFUGEES IN THE “T BUILDING”
ONA has 12 structures where refugees can live longer. These currently have 826 beds, according to the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn in response to RTL. The “T building” in Kirchberg (former building of the Court of Justice of the European Communities) recently stopped, is also part of these structures. There are currently 156 beds, of which only 30 are still available. Further work is expected to be completed by the end of the month, so there will be room for nearly 700 refugees.
There should be room for another 500 refugees in an emergency hall in Contern. The Government Council has given its approval and work will begin in the coming weeks.
A month ago, the Minister of Foreign Affairs announced that the facilities for refugees were 96% full. 3,832 people of 82 different nationalities were accommodated there. ONA alone has 2,010 beds, of which 1,072 are occupied.
France crossed the threshold of 100,000 Ukrainian refugees in early August.
