Matovič’s contribution to Slovakia – Comments and glosses – Opinions
The clock is definitely ticking on the time left for this coalition of four. It is obvious that Sulík and Matovič are not going to back down on anything, so from September 1 we will have a minority government. Although some representatives of OĽaNO are still trying to “touch the feelings” of the coalition partners, arguing about the “return of the mafia”, there really won’t be much to live for. As Winston Churchill said: “Better a terrible end than horror without end.”
If this government has been beneficial in any way, it is in the knowledge that we will start against evil does not mean that we will start cutting the devil with the devil. It would not be the first time in history that in an effort to defeat one evil, people blindly followed another.

During the Second World War, many believed that only Communism could defeat Nazism. And so they joined the party in droves. It took them a while to sober up, but after the events in Budapest in In 1956, it must have been clear to even the most ardent communist that the road did not lead here.
Of course, there were those who were clear about everything before, but they were in the minority. There is an old joke about how the Austrian chancellor Bruno Kreisky was in prison with a Nazi as a communist when he was young, which illustrates this situation nicely. The Nazi ranted that Hitler would soon come and annex Austria to the Reich. The communist countered: “But Stalin will free us!” Kreisky just sat quietly and after a while said: “and then we social democrats will come”.
Heralds of the nearest tomorrow have the advantage that they can promise people mountains and valleys. The more desperate the inhabitants, the more inclined they are to believe anything. And so it happened that in February 2020, they believed Matovič’s stories about how he would deal with corruption. So with the words on their lips: “it can’t get any worse anyway”, they “threw it to him”. In the meantime, many have regretted it a hundred times over because they have found this government so desperately incompetent that we have gone from mud to puddle.
The primary reason for the departure of SaS from the government is the person of Igor Matovič, undoubtedly behind this is the fear of the worsening economic situation and the consequent escalation of tensions in society. This way, Sulík will be able to find his hands like Pilate and pretend that he has nothing to do with it. But the opposite is true – he “created” Matovič, he ruled together with him for the past two years. He just gets out of it so easily.
If we looked in disbelief that there could be a country in which political instability reigns permanently, the government changes like on a treadmill, then we successfully worked to this state, where Italy is.
Although the record – 69 governments since the end of the war – will probably be hard to beat, we are well positioned to follow it. The current political scene creates ideal conditions for the emergence of unstable coalitions. First of all, two main players are missing, who would be clearly defined ideologically, have a strong membership base, and thus high-quality experts who could form a government. Instead, we have parties, which are clusters of couples around a leader. Although they expect this, they do not abound in competence. If a government is formed after early elections, it will be more of a small miracle.
