‘Country Falling Down Piece by Piece’
The viral post on Facebook by a Maltese man gave a rather profound breakdown of the corruption in Malta which – in his eyes – has worsened over the past years.
In two days, Daniel Muscat’s post, which was published on August 13, has since then gathered 2.7k reactions if not also the attention of several Maltese personalities.
“The country I happened to be born in is becoming more and more unbearable to live in,” he began. “Every day, one of the first thoughts that comes to my mind is what I can do to leave and start a life somewhere else.”
A move easier said than done, considering the life he, like many others, has built here.
“Greed has turned a country the size of a speck into a perpetual construction zone,” he said. “Cranes, closed roads, car accidents, dust, fumes, horrible blocks coming out of everywhere, a sea covered in mud that sticks to you when you swim, beaches packed with deckchairs…”
Photos that were uploaded along with the post on social media leave little to the imagination as Muscat made his case.
“Our country ended up being taken over by cliques of bullies and criminals,” he claimed, while adding about how the police were allegedly concluding the operation of the deckchair during the second Commune protest that took place on Sunday 14 August. “Deckchair operators who have taken a beautiful beach and made it their own.”
“Our country is falling apart piece by piece with the blessing of the authorities, while others get richer from rape.”
“And while others can enjoy a pool inside their villa, or escape on their yacht, we have to struggle for space.”
Muscat also stressed that expatriates should not be used as a scapegoat excuse for the troubles he highlighted.
“The problems I mentioned, including that of a population that has grown with carelessness, are the result of the greed of our Maltese ‘brothers’ and of the political decisions that have been and are being taken.”
“Putting blame and venting anger on ‘the foreigner’ is nothing more than a banal excuse to distract us from the bigger picture.”
