The storms brought hail, downburst and significant precipitation. Another wave of storms will arrive on Monday
Our territory was affected today by storms that appeared mainly in northern and eastern Slovakia. The storms also brought dangerous accompanying phenomena, such as downbursts or large hail. Most often, however, storms bring torrential rainfall. The weather will bring storms in the next few days as well. Another wave of storms awaits our territory tomorrow.
Slovakia was hit by storms on Sunday. They formed into a storm system in eastern Slovakia, while in the rest of our territory they were original orographic storms from heat. Alternatively, they are waiting for us in the next few days.
Storms were most dangerous in the east
Already around noon, very strong storms were forming over Ukraine in the Carpathian region, which were slowly moving towards the west. The storms in our territory gained strength, but they were still predominantly orographic, that is, they were tied to the terrain.
The strongest storm formed over the western part of Zemplínská Šírava. This storm even brought a downburst over the Šírava area, which can also be seen in the webcam image.

Downburst is always extremely dangerous during thunderstorms. It is a strong downward current of air, which spreads to the sides after touching the earth’s surface. You can imagine it on a water balloon. After the impact, the water “splashes” to the sides, and it’s the same with a downburst. In such a phenomenon, a strong gust of wind can occur, which can also cause great material damage. Damage is often similar to what an F0 to F2 tornado can cause.
This storm cell from the area of Zemplínská Šírava continued towards the west and brought hail to the villages near the water reservoir. The largest hailstones that were recorded reached a diameter of up to 3 cm.

Storms also occurred in other parts of our territory. Heavy central Slovakia also experienced numerous storms, which, however, no longer brought strong wind or hail, but mainly heavier precipitation. Tens of millimeters of rain fell locally, while the most rain was recorded by rain gauge stations in Lokac na Orava and in Vrátná dolina, where it rained from 35 to 39 mm. However, as can be seen on the totals map, precipitation from showers and storms occurred in several places.

Another wave of storms already on Monday
Storms are expected in our territory in the coming days as well. The weather will be under the influence of a high-altitude area of lower pressure, and at the same time, very warm air will flow into our area from the southeast.
The warm and moist air will become labile during the afternoon and showers and storms will form in this labile air. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are expected until Thursday.
