The EU fears a nuclear disaster, Hungary signed the statement asking the Russians
Military conflicts are ongoing in the vicinity of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant, and this threatens the region with a nuclear disaster. We have written about this topic in more detail in the following articles over the past three days:
The letter dated August 12 responds to this European External Action Service website The statement in English published on August 14, the Hungarian translation reads as follows:
“This statement Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania , Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Korea, Republic of Moldova, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland , is issued on behalf of the United States of America and the European Union.
The Russian Federation’s unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, a sovereign country, seriously violates international law, which includes the UN Charter.
We strongly support the importance of the seven fundamental pillars of nuclear safety and security, as outlined by IAEA Director General Grossi. Inspection of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant – the largest Russian nuclear power plant in Europe – poses a great threat to these principles. The placement of Russian military personnel and weapons in the nuclear facility is unacceptable and disregards the safety, security and safeguards principles that all IAEA members have undertaken to respect.
The presence of Russian military forces at the Zaporizhzhya NPP ensured that the operator and the Ukrainian authorities fulfill their nuclear and radiation safety obligations in accordance with international conventions and IAEA safety regulations, and certified that the IAEA fulfills its safeguard mandate.
We urge the Russian Federation to immediately withdraw its military forces and all other unauthorized persons from the Zaporizhzhya NPP, its immediate surroundings and all of Ukraine, that the operator and the Ukrainian authorities once again fulfill their sovereign obligations within the internationally recognized borders of Ukraine, and that personnel outside perform their duties without interference, threats or unacceptably harsh working conditions. This also enables the IAEA to examine the verification of Ukraine’s safeguard obligations under safe conditions and in a timely manner.
We fully support the work of the IAEA and its Director General to assist Ukraine in implementing nuclear safety, safeguards and safeguards during Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine, while respecting Ukraine’s full sovereignty over its territory and infrastructure.
As it was already expressed in the decision of the Governing Council No. GOV/2022/17, Russia’s invasion and continued presence at Ukraine’s nuclear facilities increases the risk of nuclear incidents and accidents.
We strongly condemn Russia’s attempts to use disinformation to justify its illegal actions in Ukraine.
The international community will hold Russia accountable for its aggression, and Russia must take full responsibility for its illegal actions in Ukraine.”
